Wow. That really sucks... Does PayPal provide any assistance if you file a police report?

Probably not. PayPal is in fact quite antagonistic about the whole thing since I didn’t follow their policies to the letter. What little I know I had to deduce on my own, because trying to even ask PayPal “how did this happen?� results in them telling me their investigation is confidential and basically giving me the run-around and flat out ignoring me.
At this point, the way this whole thing was handled, I feel that PayPal is just as criminal as the scammer. And now that this has happened to me I’ve done research and found several websites listing hundreds of complaints from other PayPal users with almost the EXACT same experience as me… all trying to figure out if there is anything they can do.
So yes, it really sucks, and I’m not sure there is much I can do.
